Electronic Dance Music ( EDM ) - Struggles of a New Upcoming Music Producer



 

For the Last 10 Years , I have been reviewing how The Electronic Dance Music scene or EDM as a Genre has evolved not just as an Overall Genre , but its growth and flourish into its various Sub- Genres. The Growth of this genre of Music was always something that I had always believed in having seen the Dance Era of the 90's ( including later parts of the 80's ) & the Success of the RAP music of those days & much later towards the later part of the 90's and more specifically the early parts of the advent of HIP - HOP era , when the genre started making head- away into main stream Music.

 

What I am about to write on my post this evening is about the struggles I have seen an Upcoming Deejay ( which I feel is a wrong word ) but rather a Music Producer who creates melodies using the electronic waves platform and translates music to the heart using a MIDI.

 

Today, the music scene has moved far away from the scene of physical CD's and complete albums . Thanks to the digital platforms available , music lovers procure their favourite music through the various digital outlets , Beatport being one the Largest Digital Platforms for any EDM music producer to sell their music ( Note : **Beatport is not the only digital platform . Amazon , iTunes and various other platforms are available ) and here is where the struggle starts for a New and Upcoming music producer who wants to reach out to a larger audience on a Global perspective and obviously , not to deny Sell his/her music ..... " Nobody is here to do charity , Hungry tummies make noise not music"

 

Sharing some of the real time situations a new music producer faces while he/she wants to sell their music on this digital platform   

 

• A new music producer doesn't get the support of a Recognised Music Label instantly , every music label expects a certain trade mark experience which a new music producer defaults , hence in most cases , these set of music producers either go Solo on release of their work or sell their music on contracts with lesser known music labels who have limited resource to pay the fee upfront
• These new music producers on most of the accounts have a very small fan base . ** Remember - A FAN is much more different a person than a FOLLOWER . And how to differentiate a Fan and a Follower . A Fan would promote music of their Artiste / Bands / Musicians , a Follower is on most occasions a person who would Listen , but never adds any valuation in the process of revenue generation for that particular artiste/ band / musician.
• These new music producers , hardly get the support of Viral Marketing . Now what is " Viral Marketing" - its promotion on various Social Media pages or Websites that promote / Make Charts / Make Ratings / Magazines ( Speaking more of exclusive to Music )
• One of the Platforms these set of New Musicians use and is very popular is " SOUNDCLOUD " . Now the problem with Soundcloud or some other music producers I interact mostly use Mixcloud ( I am not speaking of the other Digital Share Platforms here going by the popular ones only) is that when you have a limited Fan base , the spread is low ( Almost 50% of the listeners on these platforms used mobile networks to access ) Forced , the music producer goes and allows Free Download to attract Followers and makes that Candid mistake of allowing followers to download free from their Soundcloud accounts , instead of making it mandatory to like their Facebook pages and get the download from their FB Pages . People Love what they get free & What comes free is least valued and finally we have a Musician whose honest hard work , every damn soul is enjoying , but that appreciation for which the Entire gimmick was done never reached adulance
• This is the final point of struggle I am mentioning this evening and this one is a Major hurdle to cross . Assuming , everything goes fine for this new music producer , somehow either goes Solo or Via a New Record Label and releases his/her music . You know , there are Big Names in the industry who have made their way to the Tops all these years and on the same Damn week or day Releases their work as well . Considering the Huge Fan Base helped by Viral Marketing , it reaches the Top of the Charts ( Sales Figures Matter Here ) and inspite of having made a decent to an amazing work , this new producer doesn't find a place in the genre TOP 100 & there we are left with a situation , where there is Music available with a buy and own option but nobody can't find where ???

Now I have jotted down the problems that I thought specific and important ones . Having shared the problems , how do we work to rectify this problem now ..... " Having a problem is good enough, not knowing the solution is a real struggle " Some of my suggestions >>>

 

• Give free downloads from your Facebook / Twitter / Tumblr accounts . Share the link on Soundcloud in such a way that's linked with one of your Pages in case you don't own a Website . In case you have a Website of yours , let the download be from there only .
• Search a list of music websites who promote upcoming musicians / bands / music producers and write to them . There is no Shame in writing to them and not get a response , but being a talented musician sitting down in his/her talent with the ass flattened .
• Send in your music to people who matter in the industry and ask them to review your work . If you get a feedback on your work, chances are 10 other people have been talked about your work
• Keep a count of people who share / repost your work and follow the reach they have created for your work . Ensure you get the e-mail id' s of these set of people . A personalised mail in an era where letters have fallen flat would be much more beautiful than your free download
• Explore every set of digitally suggestive application and reach out
• More importantly , always mention where to reach out that includes - Your E-Mail Id.
• Use Youtube , Nothing appeals more than seeing and listening to it to Believe
• Never Lose HEART ever !!! You don't know which of your tracks are being listened , when you thought noboby Listened in the first place !!!

Now , Since My Childhood , I have been a Great Fan of Michael Jackson. For me , even Till date He is the Greatest Entertainer of All Times . Needless to say , that Inspite of all the controversies He Usually landed up with , till his last days of his life , My strong feeling about this fact that Nobody in the Music Industry Has been able to ensure That Every Ticket a Fan of his Bought for his Live Concert went Home with a feeling of " Yes , It was a Great Deal "

 

Through this blog , I would be sharing about 6 Music Videos that I have selected over a period of 30 years , since the 80's and till this date where MJ's Dance Moves could be seen being used for the dance routines .

** STEVE GARCIA

BIO :

2013 starts off with a bang, as Steven Garcia is hand picked to compete in the Hard Rock Rising Battle of the Bands.Although he is mostly known for his work with The Rachels out of Houston, TX, Steven Garcia collaborated with Love Sick Dog Publishing for several singles in 2012.

2012 turned out to be a busy year for Steven. With the January release of the single "Will You or Won't You", Steven was given the Song of the Week (February 19 - 25) on Jamsphere Indie Rock Magazine from London.

Steven has since been hand picked by Dodge as one of the top 500 bands on Reverbnation in their "Inspired by You" contest. He was featured on Hosstheboss.com, e-buffett magazine story podcast, and several podcast from the Uk which included best 2011 European podcast nominee Cyphreinc. He was also featured Crunch Radio.com, Tunecast.net (Podcast #14), Island Studio Solutions, and is on the charts on Hotshotbands.com from Vancouver.

Steven is currently on the Reverbnation Rock Chart for his hometown of Corpus Christi. He can also be found on Jango, Iamradio, UnsignedTopCharts, SoundCloud and Iheartradio.

Even though Steven still plans to record and tour with The Rachels in 2013, he has recorded two singles as a solo artist for Love Sick Dog Publishing; Will You or Won't You and Quasimodo.The "Will You or Won't You" was released through itunes in 2012 as a solo artist.

Steven and The Rachels have also re-recorded and released their first CD "Buy American" with three new songs. They are also planning to re-record other past CDs and may release a compilation CD in 2013.

Steven has worked closely with songwriter Jason Greene and country artist Clay Walker. He was also signed to Clay Walker's publishing company at one time. Steven and The Rachels are also featured on the motion picture soundtrack to the film "Noble Things".

** Ménage

BIO :

The Ferreira siblings spent there whole childhood travelling between Toronto Canada, and Small town Portugal where their heritage and much of their family still lived. Through being divided between Canadian, indoor boredom, and European culture, the common thread that was present on both sides of the globe, was the influence of the music that they were exposed to.

The household ...was soon filled with a drum set, a keyboard, and some traditional portuguese guitars. As quite common, the kids grew apart, Bela, recording piano based song ideas, keeping to herself, performing wherever she could . From various new york city open mics to touring in Canada.
Brothers Gabriel and Basilio kicked around Toronto, Los Angeles, started bands, fought, would self destruct, and do it again.

For the first time all three have set aside their differences and contributed to what they all can agree as being the first thing that is exciting to them since first picking up their instruments.

With mixer David Bottrill (Muse, Placebo, Peter Gabriel) and mastering engineer Ted Jensen (Radiohead, Bjork, Sigur Ros) on their side, this brother/sister, dual fronted band is ready to become the music that inspires on an international level.

** Escaping Vendetta

BIO :

DIY Birmingham quartet fronted by half Scottish/Philippine mixup Ren Byers, alongside Klee, Steve and Dan. After two self-released singles ‘Got No Soul and ‘Sacrifice’ the band have all intentions of roaming around the country spreading their drop tuned guitars, inter-winding vocals and pounding rhythmic section amongst the masses!

** SOLIFUGE

BIO :

Solifuge was born January 1999 from the brilliant minds of Carlo "Black King" Campus [Lead Guitar] and Daniele "Pinna" Amatori [Bass Guitar].
In the same year the vocalist Francesco Morena and the drummer Jonah Padella joined the band.
In 2001 they recorded the debut EP "Solifuge" inspired by the dark side of metal.
After an intense line of live shows, the guys took different roads...
... In 2008, Carlo, and Francesco decided to reform the band.
Luk [Bass] and Gianluca [Drums] joined Solifuge.
After a few months, the band activities slowed down...but Solifuge's heart still remained beating.
It was in the year 2010 where Solifuge was raised again. But this time, Solifuge was brewing up fresh new ideas together with a new line-up and style.
Mad Curtis joined the band as the key vocalist and Solifuge started working hard in the studio creating new songs, and performing various live shows.
By 2011, all new songs were recorded and Solifuge released their new CD “Through The Loathing Of A Sick Mind” in June 2012.
Together with the new cd release, the band started a collaboration
with Revalve Records, for worldwide cd distribution. The cd is
now available in digital format at major distribution channels, like iTunes and Amazon.

Solifuge’s first few singles such as "Wake Up Your Soul From Nightmares" and "Bounce" have been released and valued by Todd Page (ex Bang Tango's tour manager and current Mandy Lion's manager). After a few chats, it was no longer a surprise that he started a collaboration as Solifuge’s US Promoter.

Zak Smith, Montclair, NJ - "He's got an amazing ability to incorporate the sounds of alternative rock with Americana to form his own signature sound... remember his name” (Gary Wien, "Are You Listening? The Top 100 Albums of 2001-2010 from New Jersey Artists).

Zak's alternative/americana sound has come from years of listening to artists from the past like Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen. With a heavy focus on lyrics and backing vocal arrangements, Zak's music follows in the tradition of singer/songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and Neil Young while also incorporating the gospel influenced call and response backup singing style used by artists such as Ray Charles and The Temptations.

Here are some excerpts from Q&A with Cedric :

•   What would you say as the Greatest Inspiration in your life ?

Both personally and professionally music inspires me to do good in life. Because it can touch my emotions, and make me forget about all the bad things in life.

• How would you like your music to be identified and classified as against all other DJ's of the world ?

I guess I have a pretty standard answer, I try to give it my own signature style  by layering different sounds on top of each other. In this way it is possible to come up with unique sounds, something different to make the crowd go crazy. Its a lot of experimentation, trial and error.

One tip: If your struggling with a sound in your mix and it seems like you can't get it to fit right. Maybe it's good to consider removing or placing the sound somewhere at a different point in the mix..

•  Other than Music , any addiction that you have ?

At the moment I smoke cigarettes and everyone knows it's bad for your health.

• What has been your greatest learning experience till date ?

Never judge someone based on his or her appereance, you might under-estimate someone if you do.

• Alright , Were you a Bully in School anytime ?

I have made some silly jokes towards other people, but I was not the one who liked bullying people. Actually there was a kid who got bullied and felt sorry for him, So I tried cheering him up.

• When did you actually realise that Music was your calling ?

Actually it wasn't really long ago since I noticed I have some kind of obsession with music. Luckily its a positive thing, because I still have some social life left, haha ...! But to answer your question it was in September-2011, a colleague I was working with asked me to listen to his self produced game and hardcore music.So when I did I thought by myself : " It's not really my style of music but it's magical to make something like that ! " So when I asked how he did this, he invited me to check out how to make music and discuss the basics of producing. And When we did ...... I started using Reason and Pro Tools as studio software and never stopped developing myself ever after that.

• Just wanted to know are you a Book Lover as well ?

It depends on the story, I have read some books in the past and I really liked to read.....

But since I discovered music I only read about music. Mostly they are digital books.

• Now as a DJ , you make everybody go Dance on the Dance Floor with your vibes. Now Is Cedric a good dancer himself ?

I never learned any real moves, so you won't be spotting me as the first one on the dancefloor. Luckily as a DJ.... I can jump around in my booth and put my hands up !

• What has been the Best Compliment that you have ever received from any of your fans ?

There was a girl who had send me Picture of a drawing she had made for me.

It's very cool to have the feeling to be appreciated for your music and your work.

• Incase you had not been a Musician .... What would you possibly would have opted as an alternative to it ?

I would have probably gone for a sales job, I like communicating with people , interacting and making new friends and at times advising them as well.

 

• Last One and let me ask .......Does Cedric have any Phobias like say some people are scared of spiders , heights and on ... ?

That's a tough question, I can't think of something I'm really scared of !

As a Genre , Rock & its Classified Relative Genres of Today are much varied from the Ones that We used to listen to in the 1980's . But what has Over the Years in Rock Music happened then? The Hard Metal segment caught up with the Imagination of Those Born primarily towards later part of 80's and early 90's. The 90' s also show a Spurt in What Became More Popular as PUNK Rock. The Later part of 90's when the Craze for Zombie Movies erupted so also erupted a Class of audience for Gothic & Industrial Rock .

1970's Started showing a shift in the Power Houses of Rock .There was more to come , Rock was no Longer dominated by UK & US Bands. The OZ Bands started Knocking BILLBOARD and AC/DC & INXS became a Familiar name. The Europeans Were also not left behind , Many European bands started emerging including Roxette If I have to Name any. And here is Where the Musical Transition of Rock as Genre started. Hard Rock , or let me say the " Classical Rock "of today , started making way for Fusion of POP-Rock which was eveident with the styles of Roxette and many other bands that Followed.

The Success of Music Videos & Music TV Channels brought out a Spurt in to the Extent of Rock Music access to Countries where Rock officially was unheard of and was strictly considered as Western Music . That has change over the Years . The Rock scene is alowly shifting Poles towards Asian Countries. Fact is , Asia with its Huge Population and With Some of the Most Advanced and Developing Coutries set by , are a Good Consumer of Music. And if that Is a Case in time , There would great Number of Successful Asian Bands making it to the Charts everywhere .

As countries move forward listening to Rock , the cultural and musical influences have got imbibed in the fashion of making music. Here I would like to Highlight this , European Countries always had produced the Best of Dance Music and the Success of Dance in the form of Electronica with the Spurt in DJing since the Later part of 1990's and its Worldwide success is also showing to make headaway into Rock and Influence it. If Nothing else to suggest , I say the Latest LINKIN PARK album released June 26, 2012 LIVING THINGS is a Classic Example of Rock and EDM coming together to make ROCK thats far more different in music than in What Would Now Always be Called " Classic "

The Future of ROCK Music as I see ..... Possibly Bands would Never Continue to Make People Go Crazy like VAN HALEN did in the 70's with his Double Trapping trick onto the Guitar or Possibly Would Make People watch The Drums Go Buzzing when They stood by to watch Rick Allen play it out with a Single Hand. These Days of Rock are Gone & Are never Coming back . Possibly what we would see with Rock in a few Years is A DJ Mixing it Out Live on the Stage , Just as when the Bassist also kicks Guns & The Drums Go Buzz & The Vocals Go High on Fire ... But what the Audience Listens is TECHNO ROCK . And I am betting , This is Coming Soon & Pretty Fast .
